Background:
Muminunnisa Govt. Women’s College is one of the most famous educational institutions in the greater Mymensingh district. More than half a century ago, the college was established in 1959 to pave the way for female education in this part of the country. Some renowned educationists, thinkers and noble hearted great personalities devoted themselves in the initiative of establishing the college. It is with their hearty initiative, the college took the shape a complete institution, overcoming all the hurdles including land requisition, funding and running of the institutional activities. Renowned social reformer Mr. A.R Khan donated the major portion of the finance and helped develop the infrastructure of the college with a view to establishing the college after the name of his mother Muminunnisa. His contribution in collecting fund from rich persons of the society is to be noted with gratitude. The then Director of Mass Education Mr. Md. Shamsul Haq inaugurated the college on July 29, 1959. The Founder-Principal of the college was renowned educationist Alhaj Reazuddin Ahmed. A group of dedicated teachers joined Mr. Ahmed with the noble mission of imparting education. Science group started in the H.S class in 1961. The college was upgraded to a Degree college in 1963. In March, 1980 the college was nationalized. Honours courses in six disciplines were introduced from the academic session 1998-99 under National University, Gazipur. And Masters Final course was introduced from 2001-2002. Honours courses in three more subjects were introduced in 2006-2007. Honours courses in Botany and Zoology were introduced in the session 2012-2013 and 2014-2015 respectively. The hearty endeavor of the teachers and merit of the students help achieve desired success in the results of the college. The success of the students has spread home and abroad. The success of students in arts; literature and sports is also well-known throughout the country. With this process, the college was awarded the prestige of being the best institutions of the country in 1997.In 1998 the then Principal of the college was awarded the best head of institution. The girls of the college became champion in volleyball Tournament in the division level and became runners-up in the Badminton (doubles) in the Inter-College Sports Competition arranged by Dhaka Board in 2011.
Thus the tradition of fame and glory is being carried forward by the college authority, the teachers and the students.
